Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (KFFO/FFO) is a prominent United States Air Force installation located just east of Dayton, Ohio.

Type of Facility and Operations: Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is a vast and complex military facility that serves as a critical center for aerospace research, development, and logistics. It is the headquarters for the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, and the Air Force Research Laboratory. The base is a major hub for worldwide logistics and acquisition management services. It also hosts the 445th Airlift Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command, which operates C-17 Globemaster III heavy airlifters. Additionally, the base is home to a major USAF Medical Center, the Air Force Institute of Technology, and the National Museum of the United States Air Force. The airfield operates 24 hours a day.

Notable Features or History: The base possesses a rich aviation heritage, with its origins tracing back to the early 20th century. Huffman Prairie, now part of the base, was where Wilbur and Orville Wright perfected their flight experiments in 1904-1905 and operated a flying school from 1910 to 1916. The base itself was established in 1948 through the merger of Wilbur Wright Field (dating from 1917) and Patterson Field. During World War II, it significantly expanded, becoming a major logistics and supply center. In the late 1940s, it also housed Project Blue Book, an investigation into unidentified flying objects. Huffman Prairie is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and is part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.

Current Status: Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is currently open and fully operational. It is recognized as one of the largest, most diverse, and organizationally complex bases within the U.S. Air Force, covering over 8,000 acres of land. The base employs approximately 38,000 military personnel, civilians, and contractors, making it the largest single-site employer in Ohio. It features two runways, with the longest measuring 12,600 feet (3,840 meters). The base handles tens of thousands of aircraft operations annually.
