Akron Fulton International Airport (AKR, IATA: AKC) is a public general aviation airport located in Akron, Summit County, Ohio, United States. It is owned by the City of Akron.
Type of Facility and Operations: The airport is open to the public and operates without a control tower. It offers first-class Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) services, including fuel (100LL and Jet-A), passenger and pilot lobbies, car rental, catering, aircraft repair (major airframe and powerplant service), avionics service, flight training, aircraft rental and charter, and pilot supplies. The airport is staffed Monday-Friday from 06:00 to 22:00 and Saturday-Sunday from 08:00 to 20:00. In the year ending September 19, 2022, the airport had 48,910 aircraft operations, primarily general aviation.
Notable Features or History: Dedicated in 1929, Akron Fulton Airport has a rich history. It was home to the original Goodyear Airdock, where the first lighter-than-air ships were built, and during World War II, Goodyear Aircraft produced over 130 airships and 4,000 naval FG-1D Corsair fighter aircraft at the airport. It also served as Naval Air Station Akron, training pilots during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The airport is recognized as the 3rd National Landmark of Soaring by the National Soaring Museum. The Akron Fulton International Airport Administration Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although it primarily serves general aviation, it is considered an "international airport" due to having United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities.
Current Status: Akron Fulton International Airport has one asphalt runway, 7/25, which is 6,336 feet long and 150 feet wide. The airport is currently operational but has an active construction notice. In 2020, the Akron City Council approved $6 million in upgrades, including lighting system improvements and runway reconstruction, partially funded by the CARES Act.
