It operates as a general aviation facility and does not have scheduled commercial service.
The airport is situated at an elevation of 20 feet (6 meters) above mean sea level and covers an area of 1,100 acres (445 ha). It features three concrete runways:
- Runway 06/24: 5,271 feet (1,607 meters) long and 150 feet wide.
- Runway 14/32: 5,425 feet (1,654 meters) long and 150 feet wide.
- Runway 18/36: 5,251 feet (1,601 meters) long and 150 feet wide.
Known uses for the airport include general aviation activity, recreational flying, corporate/business aviation, flight training for both civilian and military aircraft, air taxi operations, public charters, agricultural spraying, military training, environmental patrol, and search and rescue. A fixed-base operator (FBO) is available, offering services such as fuel, aircraft parking, and maintenance.
Historically, the airport was originally constructed in 1939 by the U.S. Army Air Corps. It was expanded in February 1942 and became Apalachicola Army Air Field, serving as a sub-base of Tyndall Field (now Tyndall Air Force Base) and supporting the Training Command Flexible Gunnery School during World War II. The Army Airfield was inactivated on September 30, 1945, and eventually became a civil airport, deeded to the municipality of Apalachicola.
