🇸🇸 Wau Airport

Wau Airport (IATA: WUU, ICAO: HSWW) is a civilian airport located in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal, South Sudan, northeast of the city's central business district. It serves the city and surrounding communities, primarily supporting domestic travel and playing a significant role in humanitarian missions.

Notable Features and History: The airport is situated at an elevation of 433 meters (1,421 ft) above sea level. It features a single paved runway, designated 09/27, which was extended to 2,500 meters (8,200 ft) in December 2012. Wau Airport is one of only four paved airports in South Sudan, highlighting its regional importance. Following South Sudan's independence in 2011, the airport underwent significant rehabilitation efforts to modernize its infrastructure. It is also utilized by UNMISS and international relief organizations. The airport has been involved in several incidents, including a 2017 South Supreme Airlines crash and a 1991 Lockheed L-100-20 Hercules hitting a landmine.

Current Status: Wau Airport is operational and classified as a regional or midsized facility. Currently, Feeder Airlines operates three return flights weekly connecting Khartoum, Wau, and Juba. In January 2026, the National Ministry of Transport announced plans to upgrade Wau Airport to international standards, which includes extending the runway to five kilometers and constructing new passenger terminal buildings for both arrivals and departures. This upgrade aims to position Wau Airport as a strategic alternative to Juba International Airport and facilitate direct international flights. The airport currently offers basic facilities for passengers, with limited maintenance capabilities. As of April 2026, no operational issues have been reported.
