🇬🇧 RAF Fairford Airport

RAF Fairford (EGVA (FFD)) is a Royal Air Force (RAF) station located in Fairford, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. While owned by the UK Ministry of Defence, it primarily hosts United States Air Force (USAF) personnel and operations under a US-UK hosting agreement.

Type of Facility and Operations: RAF Fairford serves as the USAF's only European airfield for heavy bombers and is a preferred forward operating location for US Air Force Global Strike Command bombers in Europe. It routinely supports Bomber Task Force (BTF) operations, hosting deployments of aircraft such as B-1B Lancers, B-2A Spirits, and B-52H Stratofortresses. Since 2019, it has also hosted a Lockheed U-2S Dragon Lady reconnaissance aircraft detachment from the 99th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron. The base maintains combat readiness to receive and support operational units for US and NATO contingencies and exercises.

Notable Features or History: Originally built between 1943 and 1944 to support D-Day operations, including troop transport and glider flights, the airfield was transferred to the USAF in 1950 for strategic bomber operations during the Cold War. It features one of the longest runways in the UK, measuring 3,045m (9,990 ft), with an unrestricted load-bearing capacity, capable of accommodating any aircraft. RAF Fairford was also the only TransOceanic Abort Landing (TAL) site in the UK for NASA's Space Shuttle, equipped with NASA-trained fire and medical crews. The base is widely known as the home of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), an annual military airshow recognized as one of the largest in the world. Historically, it was the first home base for the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, in 1965, and served as a British Flight Test Centre for the Concorde aircraft from 1969 to 1978. It has played a prominent role in various conflicts, including the first Gulf War (1991), Operation Allied Force (1999), and the Iraq War (2003).

Current Status: RAF Fairford is an operational RAF station that functions as a critical forward operating location for the USAF. While it is often described as a standby airfield, it actively hosts various transient military aircraft and exercises throughout the year, with a consistent presence of a U-2S Dragon Lady detachment. As of March 2026, the base has seen a deployment of B-1 Lancers for "specific defensive operations" in the Middle East. The 501st Combat Support Wing Headquarters and the 420th Air Base Squadron are based at RAF Fairford, managing operations, maintenance, and logistics.
