It is not a private airfield but a military airport that shares its runways and ground/air control facilities with the civilian Brussels Airport.
The air base operates with three asphalt runways: 01/19 (2,987 m / 9,800 ft), 07R/25L (3,211 m / 10,535 ft), and 07L/25R (3,638 m / 11,936 ft). Primarily, it serves as the home for the 15th Air Transport Wing of the Belgian Air Force, which utilizes aircraft such as the Airbus A400M Atlas, Dassault Falcon 7X, and Embraer 135 & 145 for military transport and VIP operations. The flight service of the Belgian Federal Police (DAFA), a helicopter unit, is also based here.
Historically, Melsbroek Air Base was constructed by the German Wehrmacht during World War II. Following Belgium's liberation in 1944, it was operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Air Force, known then as B58 Melsbroek. After the war, it served as Belgium's national airport for civil aviation until the Zaventem terminal, part of the larger Brussels Airport complex, was developed for the 1958 world exposition.
