It was renamed in 2024 after the incumbent President Bola Tinubu by the state government.

The airport serves Minna and is operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). It is considered an alternate airport to Abuja due to its proximity and the international standard length of its runway. The airport is primarily used for Hajj operations.
