Wawa Airport (IATA: YXZ, ICAO: CYXZ) serves Wawa, CA.
Wawa Airport (IATA: YXZ, ICAO: CYXZ) is a public airport located 1.7 nautical miles (3.1 km; 2.0 mi) south-southwest of Wawa, Ontario, Canada. It is operated by The Corporation of the Municipality of Wawa.
Type of facility and operations: The airport serves chartered passenger flights, general aviation, and air ambulance (MEDEVAC). It has one asphalt runway, 03/21, measuring 4,429 feet (1,350 meters) by 98-100 feet (30 meters). The runway is equipped with pilot-controlled lighting, Runway ID Lights (Strobes), PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) for both runways, and GPS-based approach capability. Fuel services include 100LL and Jet A-1.
Notable features or history: The idea to convert an existing gravel airstrip into an airport was proposed in 1968. Funding issues arose, with the Michipicoten Township Council expecting the Ontario Government to cover the full cost, but only receiving 50%. The Canada Department of Transport tentatively approved licensing for 3,300 ft of the available 4,600 ft in May 1969, setting aside $1 million for development. The airport officially opened on August 11, 1975, by Premier Bill Davis, with commercial flights beginning on July 17, 1975. It initially offered daily passenger flights to Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, and nearby communities via Air-Dale and NorOntair. A terminal building opened in September 1980.
The runway underwent resurfacing from summer 1977 to July 1978, and again for maintenance from July to October 1997. Regular passenger service was provided by NorOntair, then Bearskin Airlines starting in 1996, and finally Air Georgian from 1999 until service ceased on February 10, 2001, marking the last regular passenger service.
Accidents include a private helicopter crash in July 1980, injuring one person, and a medical transport flight crash upon landing in November 2023, destroying the plane but causing no injuries.
Current status: Wawa Airport is open to the public and is a registered aerodrome. It continues to support medevac, corporate, and seasonal resource-sector flying. Landing fees apply.
