The airport began as a World War II Royal Air Force training base. After the war, it transitioned to public/commercial use. A notable incident occurred in 1971 when an Iberia Airlines Boeing 747 made an emergency landing due to a bomb threat, marking the first time a 747 landed at such a small airport.
Current facilities include a modern terminal building, a combined services building with a maintenance garage, and a 930 m² (10,000 sq ft) hangar,. The airport has two asphalt runways (06/24 at 1,829 m (6,000 ft) and 15/33 at 1,524 m (5,000 ft)), two taxiways, and separate parking aprons for commercial and general aviation,.
