Kingston Norman Rogers Airport (IATA: YGK, ICAO: CYGK) serves Kingston, CA.
Kingston Norman Rogers Airport (YGK), also known as Kingston Airport, is a public airport located 4.3 nautical miles (8.0 km) west of downtown Kingston, Ontario, Canada. It is the main airport serving Kingston and its metropolitan area. The airport is named after Norman McLeod Rogers, a former Member of Parliament for Kingston City who served as Minister of Labour and later Minister of National Defence.
Type of Facility and Operations: YGK is classified as an Airport of Entry (AOE 30) by Nav Canada, meaning the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) can process aircraft with up to 30 passengers arriving from outside Canada. It operates as a mandatory frequency airport with a flight service station. The airport supports various types of air travel, including medical patient transfers, UPS freight, corporate, military, and private general aviation flights. It also offers general aviation services such as aircraft parking, fueling, and maintenance through its fixed-base operators and partners. The airport is home to flight schools, including the Kingston Flying Club, and a helicopter maintenance facility.
Notable Features and History: The airport was established in 1940 during World War II, initially serving as Canada's first air training school for Britain's Royal Air Force. It was built on 700 acres and played a significant role in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The airport's runway outline still displays the classic BCATP triangle pattern, and a decommissioned yellow Harvard aircraft near the entrance commemorates its wartime role. After the war, the Department of Transport gained ownership and leased it to the City of Kingston, which eventually purchased the airport in 1974.
In 2018, the airport began a modernization project that included an expansion of its passenger terminal, upgrades to navigational aids, and an extension of its primary runway (01/19) from 5,000 ft to 6,001 ft. This expansion aimed to accommodate larger aircraft and more passengers. YGK is also notable for being one of the only public airports to offer an ILS approach between Montréal–Trudeau and Toronto–Pearson, making it an important alternate during poor weather conditions.
Current Status: As of March 2023, the airport manager indicated that YGK handles approximately 80% of its pre-pandemic flight volume, including daily medical transfer flights to Kingston Health Sciences Centre hospitals, daily cargo flights, military operations, and private corporate flights. However, scheduled passenger airline service was temporarily paused in January 2023 when Pascan Aviation suspended its operations at YGK. The airport is actively engaging in discussions with multiple airlines to restore passenger services and is exploring the possibility of future international flights.
