Yining Airport (IATA: YIN, ICAO: ZWYN) serves as the primary air gateway to Yining City, also known as Ghulja, and the surrounding Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It plays a crucial role in connecting this geographically remote but culturally rich and scenic region with the rest of the country, supporting both tourism and local economic development. The airport is a vital link for accessing popular destinations like the Nalati and Kalajun grasslands.

Originally established in 1936, the airport has undergone significant upgrades to accommodate modern air travel. A major expansion completed in 2009 included a new terminal building and runway extension, substantially increasing its capacity. The airport is conveniently located approximately 5 kilometers northeast of Yining's city center, making for a short and straightforward transfer. Travelers can typically reach the city by taxi, with the journey taking around 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. An airport shuttle bus service also provides a more economical connection to key points within Yining.

Yining Airport operates exclusively domestic flights, with its busiest and most frequent route connecting to Urumqi Diwopu International Airport (URC), the region's main aviation hub. Major Chinese carriers, including China Southern Airlines, Tianjin Airlines, Air China, and China Eastern Airlines, operate services from YIN. In addition to the Urumqi shuttle, there are direct flights to major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Xi'an, particularly during the peak tourist season. Prior to 2020, the airport handled over 1.7 million passengers annually, reflecting its importance as a regional transport facility.

The airport features a single, modern terminal building designed for efficiency. Inside, facilities are functional and sufficient for the volume of traffic it handles. Passengers will find check-in counters, a security screening area, and a main departure lounge with seating. Amenities include a few small retail shops offering local products and travel essentials, as well as basic food and beverage outlets for snacks and light meals.
