Wingfield Air Base serves Cape Town, ZA.
Wingfield Air Base (ZA-0194) in Cape Town, South Africa, originally known as the Cape Town Municipal Aerodrome, holds significant historical importance in South African aviation. It served as the city's primary airport until commercial flights were relocated to the newly opened Cape Town International Airport in 1954.
During World War II, the aerodrome played a critical role as an Air Force Station under the SAAF and later as a Fleet Air Arm base for the Royal Navy, contributing to maritime patrols and pilot training. The Royal Navy officially closed its operations there on May 31, 1946.
Today, the site is classified as closed for aviation purposes, with its runways no longer maintained. Portions of the former air base are currently utilized by the South African Navy, housing the SAS Wingfield Technical College and Naval Stores Depot, as well as the Acacia Park Parliamentary Village and the Goodwood Correctional Centre. There are ongoing discussions regarding the release of underutilized military land at Wingfield for housing development, though the Department of Defence has expressed national security concerns.
