Taxi ranks are located directly outside the arrivals area of both the T1 (International) and T2 (Domestic) terminals. Cairns Taxis is the main provider. Rideshare services like Uber and Didi are also available from designated pick-up zones.
Major car rental companies including Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and Thrifty have service desks located in the Arrivals Hall of both terminals. Pre-booking is highly recommended, especially during peak travel seasons.
Sunbus operates a public bus service connecting the airport to the Cairns CBD and the northern beaches bus network. The bus stop is located at the T2 (Domestic) terminal. Private airport shuttle services offering transfers to hotels and Port Douglas are also available and can be pre-booked.

Back in 1999 I was traveling to Australia for business. I managed to spend some time visiting Cairns. I flew up from Sydney on a 747-SP, walked down the jet stairs on to the apron - cool! Then later on in the week I rented a C172, VH-WHK, along with an instructor to fly up the coastline sight seeing. Amazing! I also was amazed to see an HF radio in this C172 - but this made sense, since you are often in the outback. Great times - I hope it is still the same or better.
