Changi Air Base (East) (WSAC), also known as the Changi East Complex, is a military airbase in Singapore operated by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and the United States Air Force. It is an extension of the original Changi Air Base, now referred to as Changi Air Base (West).
Notable Features and History:
- Groundbreaking for Changi Air Base (East) occurred on July 15, 2002, and it was officially opened on November 29, 2004.
- It was the first RSAF facility jointly designed and developed by the RSAF and the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA).
- The base was built on approximately 200 hectares of undeveloped land.
- Changi Air Base (East) was established to enhance the RSAF's operational capabilities, provide greater flexibility in asset dispersal, and offer easier access to training areas over the South China Sea.
- It is home to the 145 Squadron, which operates F-16D Block 52+ fighter jets, along with support squadrons like the Flying Support Squadron, Air Logistics Squadron, and Airfield Maintenance Squadron.
- Innovative features include an aircraft arresting system, an advanced airfield lighting and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, ergonomically designed air traffic control tower consoles, an anti-condensation system for the control tower, and an energy-conserving lighting management system.
Current Status:
- Changi Air Base (East) is dedicated to fighter aircraft operations.
- The 02R/20L runway has been extended to 4,000 meters and is connected to Changi Airport for joint civilian and military operations, particularly with the future Terminal 5.
- A fourth runway, designated 03/21, is currently under construction to the east of the airbase and is designated solely for military use.
- The airfield at Changi East was temporarily closed for further development as part of the larger Changi Airport expansion and to facilitate the relocation of Paya Lebar Air Base, reopening at the end of 2018.
