Sisingamangaraja XII International Airport (WIMN/DTB), commonly known as Silangit Airport, is the primary air gateway to Lake Toba, a major tourism destination in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Its strategic location has made it a crucial hub for the development of regional travel, providing direct access to the scenic highlands and cultural sites of the Batak people. Originally an airfield built during the Japanese occupation, it was redeveloped for commercial use and underwent a significant transformation in 2017 when its runway was extended and its status was upgraded to international. This event opened the Lake Toba area to a wider audience and was marked by the launch of flights from neighboring countries.

The airport is situated in Siborong-Borong, North Tapanuli Regency, placing it within a one to two-hour drive of key lakeside towns like Parapat, the main ferry point to Samosir Island, and Balige. Travelers arriving at Silangit typically reach their final destinations via pre-booked private cars, official airport taxis, or public DAMRI shuttle buses that offer scheduled services to popular spots. The journey from the airport is scenic, winding through the cool-climate highlands of North Sumatra.

As a compact airport, Silangit primarily handles domestic flights connecting the region to major Indonesian hubs such as Jakarta (CGK) and Medan (KNO). Airlines like Citilink and Batik Air are regular operators. While it holds international status and has previously served routes to Malaysia and Singapore, these services can be seasonal or subject to change. The airport operates from a single, modern terminal building designed to handle several hundred thousand passengers annually. Facilities are functional and tailored to traveler needs, including check-in counters, a baggage claim area, and a modest departure lounge. Amenities consist of a few small cafes and restaurants, souvenir shops selling local coffee and Ulos fabrics, ATMs, and a prayer room.

For those traveling through Silangit Airport, arriving 90 minutes before a domestic departure is generally sufficient due to the airport’s efficient layout. It is highly advisable to arrange onward ground transportation in advance, as options upon arrival can be limited, particularly during peak travel seasons. The DAMRI bus provides a reliable and cost-effective alternative to taxis. Given the airport’s high-altitude location, the weather is often cool and can change quickly, so travelers are advised to have a jacket on hand.
