Lawas Airport (IATA: LWY, ICAO: WBGW) is a vital air transportation hub serving the town of Lawas and its surrounding district in the Limbang Division of Sarawak, Malaysia. As a designated Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) airport, it plays a crucial role in connecting this geographically isolated region with major hubs in Sarawak and Sabah. The airport is essential for local residents, government officials, and business travelers, providing a critical lifeline for passenger movement, mail delivery, and the transport of essential goods in an area where land travel can be challenging and time-consuming.

Operational for several decades, Lawas Airport has long been a cornerstone of the regional transport network. The airport is conveniently located just one kilometer from the center of Lawas town, making it exceptionally accessible. Travelers can typically reach the terminal within a few minutes by car or taxi from most parts of the town. Due to the short distance, private vehicles and local taxi services are the primary means of transportation to and from the airport. There are no dedicated public bus routes serving the airport, so visitors should plan for taxi hire or pre-arrange for pickup.

Lawas Airport exclusively handles domestic flights. Operations are managed primarily by MASwings, the regional community airline for East Malaysia, as part of the Rural Air Services (RAS) agreement. The airline operates scheduled services using De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter turboprop aircraft. Key routes connect Lawas with Miri, Kota Kinabalu, and the remote highland settlement of Ba'kelalan. Given its status as a STOLport, the airport handles a modest volume of passenger traffic focused on essential, community-based travel rather than large-scale tourism.

The airport's infrastructure is functional and reflects its role as a small regional air-link. It features a single, compact terminal building with basic amenities. Inside, travelers will find check-in counters, a public waiting area, and restrooms. Facilities are limited; there are no airport lounges, dedicated restaurants, or extensive retail shops. A small kiosk for light snacks and beverages may be available, but options are minimal.

Travelers are advised to arrive at least 60 to 90 minutes prior to their scheduled departure to allow sufficient time for check-in. As flights are operated by small aircraft and are highly dependent on weather conditions, particularly for routes into the interior highlands, passengers should be prepared for potential delays or schedule changes. It is wise to build flexibility into travel itineraries. Upon arrival, taxis are the most reliable form of transport into town.
