The primary options are motorcycle taxis (ojek) and private cars that function as informal taxis. You will likely be approached by drivers upon exiting the terminal. There are no official metered taxi companies, so it is essential to negotiate and agree on a fare before starting your journey.
Major international car rental agencies do not operate at Fakfak Airport. Car rental, almost always including a driver, can be arranged in advance through local providers or your hotel in Fakfak. It is not typically possible to rent a car spontaneously upon arrival.
There are no formal, scheduled public bus or shuttle services that operate directly from the airport terminal. The main form of local public transit, shared minibuses (angkot), may operate on the main road nearby, but they do not have a dedicated stop at the airport, making them an inconvenient option for arriving passengers with luggage.
This is a tough airport to operate from. Rising terrain on the North side, with a hill off the East end of the runway. Winds are generally no more than 10-15 knots and almost always from the South. Winds tend to favor Runway 10. Generally 3 movements per day with Wings Air and Expressair. The weather reports are very vague and somewhat unreliable.
Wild dogs live at the airport and sometimes walk around on the runway. They will avoid you if you approach them. People walk and children play on the runway. Ensure that the runway is clear before commencing an approach.
The radio operators will provide weather reports and can speak English, as long as you speak in ICAO phraseology. It helps to call repeatedly, if you do not get a response, as they are sometimes not in the tower.
