Wakde Airport serves Masi Masi Island, ID.
Wakde Airport (WAJD) is located on Wakde Island, off the northern coast of New Guinea in Papua, Indonesia.
This facility is a former World War II airfield that was originally constructed by the Japanese with an excellent crushed coral runway by 1943. The runway was identified as a single coral-surfaced strip, 5,400 feet long and 390 feet wide. Current aviation data lists one runway: 10/28.
The airfield held significant historical importance during World War II. It was seized by the United States Army in May 1944 and subsequently repaired and used by the Fifth Air Force as a forward operations base. By December 1944, it was reduced to an emergency airfield. After the war, Wakde Airfield was abandoned and has largely returned to its natural state; the island itself is now uninhabited. Limited public information is available regarding its current use, but it does not have scheduled commercial service and appears to be a disused historical site rather than an active operational airport.
