Chu Lai Airport (VCL)

Chu Lai Airport (IATA: VCL, ICAO: VVCA) is a key transportation hub located in the Tam Nghĩa commune of Núi Thành District, Quảng Nam Province, Vietnam. It serves as the primary air gateway for both Quảng Nam and the neighboring Quảng Ngãi province, playing a vital role in the development of the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone. The airport is a mixed-use facility, handling both civilian and military air traffic. Its strategic location and significant infrastructure make it an important asset for central Vietnam's economic growth and tourism.

Originally constructed as a major air base by the United States Marine Corps in 1965 during the Vietnam War, Chu Lai was one of the largest military airfields in the region. After the war, it fell into a long period of disuse before being repurposed for civilian service. Commercial operations commenced in March 2005, with the first flight connecting to Ho Chi Minh City, marking a significant milestone in the region's accessibility. A legacy of its military past is its runway, which is one of the longest in Vietnam, capable of accommodating large, wide-body aircraft.

The airport is situated approximately 27 kilometers south of Tam Kỳ, the capital of Quảng Nam, and about 42 kilometers north of Quảng Ngãi City. Due to its distance from major urban centers, travelers primarily rely on road transport. Taxis are available outside the terminal, and several airport shuttle bus services operate routes to Tam Kỳ and Quảng Ngãi, often timed to coincide with flight arrivals and departures.

Chu Lai primarily handles domestic flights, connecting the region with major Vietnamese hubs like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Key carriers operating from the airport include Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, and Bamboo Airways. While designated as an international airport, scheduled international services are not a regular feature. The airport's single passenger terminal is modest in size, reflecting its current traffic volume. Facilities for travelers are functional but limited, including check-in counters, a basic departure lounge, baggage claim, and a few small kiosks selling snacks, beverages, and souvenirs. Free Wi-Fi is generally available.

For travelers, arriving 90 minutes before a domestic flight is typically sufficient due to the airport's compact size and efficient processing. It is advisable to confirm ground transportation options in advance, especially for travel to more distant destinations like Hội An or for flights arriving late at night. Given the limited food and retail options, passengers may prefer to dine before arriving at the airport.
