HAL Airport serves Bangalore, IN.

HAL Airport (VOBG) is located approximately 12 km east of Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, and is owned and operated by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Type of Facility and Operations: The airport functions as both a military and VVIP facility. It accommodates non-scheduled civilian operations, including VIP aircraft movements, charter flights, and air ambulances. HAL and the Indian military conduct test flights from the airfield. The airport is equipped with a Category I instrument landing system and can handle aircraft as large as a Boeing 747. It has one asphalt runway (3,306 by 61 meters) and operates 24/7, offering 30 parking spots and two helipads. Facilities for civilian use include a VIP lounge, air-freight warehouse, and maintenance hangar.

Notable Features or History: Established in January 1941, it was the site of India's first aircraft factory. For over 60 years, it served as Bangalore's primary airport for all domestic and international flights. Commercial flights ceased on May 24, 2008, when the Kempegowda International Airport opened. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) no longer maintains the terminal buildings for passengers, and no airline flights are permitted due to a concession agreement.

Current Status: HAL Airport currently serves defense aircraft, VIP flights, and private jets, handling approximately 12 small aircraft daily. While it does not generally serve as a diversion alternative for Kempegowda International Airport, the civil aviation ministry has expressed interest in allowing diversions, arguing that the concession agreement does not apply to such contingencies. A strategic master plan has been approved to revitalize the facility, with the goal of resuming civilian operations after the exclusivity agreement with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) expires on May 24, 2033. The redevelopment aims for a passenger capacity of 4 million annually by 2047, including a modern terminal, multi-level parking, and upgraded access roads.
