Surkhet Airport (IATA: SKH, ICAO: VNSK) serves as the primary air gateway to Birendranagar and the wider Karnali Province, the largest but most remote province in Nepal. As a crucial transportation hub, it plays a vital role in connecting the region's residents, government officials, and development workers to the national capital, Kathmandu. The airport is essential for tourism, commerce, and the timely delivery of goods and emergency services in a geographically challenging area. Established on October 10, 1966, the airport has long been a cornerstone of regional development, facilitating access to a part of the country where road travel can be long and arduous.

Located within the Birendranagar municipality, the airport is conveniently situated approximately 5 kilometers south of the main city center. Travelers arriving at the airport can easily access the city via a short 10-15 minute drive. The most common forms of transportation available directly outside the terminal building are local taxis and auto-rickshaws. As there are no ride-sharing services, visitors should be prepared to negotiate fares with drivers. Pre-arranging a pickup with a hotel is also a reliable option for a smoother transfer.

Surkhet Airport exclusively handles domestic flights. Major Nepali carriers, including Buddha Air and Shree Airlines, operate regular scheduled services, with the primary and busiest route being the direct connection to Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. In addition to these passenger flights, the airport functions as a vital hub for smaller STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) aircraft operating charter and scheduled flights to remote, high-altitude airfields within Karnali Province, such as Jumla, Simikot, and Talcha (Rara). The airport's infrastructure consists of a single, small terminal building designed for functional use. Facilities for travelers are basic but adequate for the volume of traffic it handles. Inside, passengers will find airline check-in counters, a security screening area, and a main departure lounge with seating. Amenities are limited; there is typically a small kiosk or shop selling drinks and light snacks, but extensive dining or retail options are not available. For a hassle-free experience, travelers should plan to arrive at the airport approximately one hour before their scheduled departure time. It is also wise to monitor flight statuses, as operations in Nepal can be subject to delays or cancellations due to weather conditions, particularly visibility. All onward travel to international destinations requires a connecting flight from Kathmandu.
