Taxis are the most common and convenient transportation option available directly outside the airport terminal. Fares are generally not metered, so it is essential to negotiate and agree upon a price with the driver before starting your journey. Many hotels in Nepalgunj can also arrange for pre-booked airport pickups.
Dedicated car rental counters like major international brands are not present at the airport. However, private car or jeep rentals, almost always including a driver, can be pre-arranged through local travel agencies or your hotel. Self-drive rental is not a common or easily accessible option for visitors.
There is no direct public bus service from the airport terminal. To access local public transport, such as buses or auto-rickshaws (tempos), you must walk to the main Surkhet Road, a short distance from the airport. This option is generally less convenient, especially for travelers with luggage.
I was a VSO volunteer in Nepal in 1979. We were based at the Agricultural Research Institute on the Airport Rd. My first view of the airport was coming into land in March onboard a UN Pilatus Porter. We touched down on the mudstrip and got out and wow the heat really hit me 40degrees. There was only the control tower which was the building and a few sheds. It was rummoured that a few planes would almost touch the barbed wire on landing. When the moonsoon rains came the airport was shut, that year was a bad year with several of our favourite teashops flooded and destroyed. How things look to have changed! Good luck Nepalgunj.
