Dolpa Airport (DOP)

Dolpa Airport (IATA: DOP, ICAO: VNDP), also known as Juphal Airport, serves as a crucial air gateway to the remote and geographically isolated Dolpa District in Nepal's Karnali Province. It is the primary mode of transport for local residents, government officials, and the increasing number of trekkers visiting Shey Phoksundo National Park and other destinations in the region. Due to the area's limited road network, the airport functions as an essential lifeline, facilitating the movement of people and the supply of vital goods like food, medicine, and construction materials.

Established in 1978 with a gravel runway, the airport has played a significant role in connecting Upper and Lower Dolpa with the rest of the country. A major milestone in its history was the paving of its runway, completed in 2017. This upgrade significantly improved the airport's safety and operational reliability, allowing for more consistent flight schedules, though weather remains a determining factor. The airport is situated at an elevation of 2,499 meters (8,199 feet) and is known for its challenging approach, requiring specialized pilot training.

The airport is located in the village of Juphal. It is not situated in Dunai, the district headquarters, which lies approximately a two-to-three-hour trek downhill from the airport. Travelers arriving at Juphal typically complete their journey to Dunai on foot or by hiring a local jeep or mule for luggage transport. The trek from Dunai back up to the airport is a strenuous uphill walk.

Operations at Dolpa Airport are exclusively domestic, consisting of scheduled and chartered flights operated by Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) aircraft. Airlines such as Tara Air, Summit Air, and the national carrier Nepal Airlines conduct regular flights, primarily connecting Dolpa with Nepalgunj (KEP). All flights operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), meaning they are restricted to daytime hours and clear weather conditions, leading to frequent delays and cancellations, particularly during the monsoon season.

Facilities at the airport are minimal, reflecting its remote location. The infrastructure consists of a small terminal building with a basic check-in counter and a waiting area. There are no lounges, restaurants, or retail shops within the airport premises. Basic teahouses and lodges offering simple food and accommodation can be found in the nearby Juphal village.

Travelers planning to use Dolpa Airport should build significant flexibility into their itineraries, adding at least one or two buffer days to account for potential flight cancellations. It is inadvisable to book tight connecting international flights. Baggage allowances are strictly enforced and are much lower than on standard commercial flights. Confirming flight status directly with the airline on the day of travel is highly recommended.
