Naval Air Station (NAS) Glynco, located in Brunswick, Georgia, was identified for closure in 1974 as part of post-Vietnam budget reductions. The base officially closed at the end of 1974, despite having been a significant economic and identity factor for Glynn County for over 31 years.
Historically, NAS Glynco was built in 1942 as an air base for blimps, housing two enormous wooden hangars for a six-ship fleet and maintenance. In the 1960s, it expanded its role to train Naval Aviation Observers, later known as Naval Flight Officers (NFOs).
Following its closure, the site was repurposed. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) selected the former lighter-than-air/blimp site for a consolidated training academy in 1975. The airfield was retained by the community and became the official county municipal airport, initially named Glynco Jetport and later renamed Brunswick Golden Isles Airport (BQK) in 2003. The airport currently has an 8,000-foot jet runway and no active control tower.
