Harris Neck Army Airfield (US-5674) in Townsend, Georgia, was established in 1943 when the U.S. government condemned 2,687 acres of land to build an Army Airfield for World War II, displacing the local Gullah community,. It served as a gunnery training facility for fighter pilots and was later transferred to the U.S. Navy in 1945. The airfield was closed in 1962 when the land was transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to establish the Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge,. Today, remnants of the airfield, such as cracked asphalt runways and taxiways, are still visible within the refuge.
