Grand Central Air Terminal Airport serves Glendale, US.
The Grand Central Air Terminal (US-3170) in Glendale, US, closed in 1959. Its closure was primarily due to geographic constraints and its inability to accommodate the larger, newer commercial aircraft, particularly jets, that emerged after World War II, especially after its runway was shortened.
Historically, the Grand Central Air Terminal was a pivotal site in Southern California aviation, opening in 1928 as Los Angeles' first commercial airport and featuring the first paved runway west of the Rocky Mountains. It served as the western terminus for the United States' first regularly scheduled transcontinental flight, piloted by Charles A. Lindbergh in 1929. The airport was utilized by aviation pioneers like Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes, and during World War II, it functioned as a training facility for pilots and mechanics and a defense base.
Today, the site is owned by The Walt Disney Company as part of its Grand Central Creative Campus. The original Art Deco terminal building, designed by Henry L. Gogerty, has undergone extensive restoration by Disney and now serves as an event space, business offices, and a visitor center/museum. The former runway has been converted into Grand Central Avenue, a public street.
