Phillips Field serves Fairbanks, US.
Phillips Field (US-2916) in Fairbanks, Alaska, officially closed on September 1, 1991, though some flights occurred afterward, with the last flight taking place on May 31, 1992, from a hastily-graded access road after the runway was torn up. The closure was due to city, borough, and state transportation planners deciding in the 1970s that a new transportation corridor was needed, with the most economical route running down the center of the airport's runway.
Historically, Phillips Field was established around 1950 by a partnership of pilots who wanted a private, pilot-oriented airfield close to town that could serve wheeled, ski- and float-equipped planes, and minimize costs for pilots. It was a hub for air taxis, guides, and small-plane pilots in the Fairbanks area until the late 1970s. The runway was eventually 3,600 feet long, with 1,000 feet paved and 2,600 feet graveled.
The site of Phillips Field is now covered by the Johansen Expressway, which was built directly over the former runway. As of 2009-2010, some hangars remained standing on the northeast side of the former airfield, used by other businesses.
