🇺🇸 Montgomery Airfield / Marina Airfield

Montgomery Airfield, also known as Marina Airfield (US-2357), was located in San Francisco on what is now the Marina Green. The site was initially known as Marina Flying Field from 1915 and was later renamed Montgomery Field in 1919, honoring pioneer aviator John J. Montgomery.

The airfield held historical significance as the first terminus of the United States Post Office Department's Transcontinental Air Mail Service, with the inaugural scheduled mail-plane landing on September 9, 1920. It was used for exhibition flights during the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition and later by Western Airways until 1924. Commercial and general aviation activities eventually transitioned to Mills Field (now San Francisco International Airport) in the 1930s. The Marina site was abandoned for mail plane operations as the City and County of San Francisco ceased appropriations for land rentals, leading to operations moving to Crissy Field by 1921, and the site became the Marina Vanderbilt Tract with homes built by 1924. In 1944, the Marina Green was also the location of the first public flight of the Hiller XH-44, America's first coaxial helicopter.

Today, the former airfield is part of the Marina Green, a 74-acre public park administered by the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department, offering views of the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Island, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Plaques at the site commemorate its aviation history.
