🇺🇸 Luke Air Force Auxiliary Field 8

Luke Air Force Auxiliary Field 8 (US-1343), commonly identified as Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field (GBAFAF), is not a closed facility but rather an active auxiliary airfield. Established in July 1942, it historically served as the headquarters for the Gila Bend Gunnery Range during World War II, playing a vital role in pilot training.

Currently, GBAFAF functions as an emergency landing facility for military aircraft from Luke Air Force Base and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, and supports units utilizing the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range complex. While it remained staffed by USAF personnel until approximately 1995, its operations are now managed by private contractors. The field is continuously used for training, including traffic pattern work and simulated engine flameout procedures. Its control tower maintains specific hours of operation, and prior permission is generally required for landings, except in emergencies.
