Common Complaints

• Challenging and Uneven Runway: The dirt/turf runway is in "fair condition," characterized by an uneven surface, 8-10 inches of tall grass, and slight undulations, leaving "no room for error". The first 400 feet of the northeast end are particularly soft sand.
• Difficult Approaches and Obstructions: Approaches are described as challenging due to terrain and trees at both ends, with the runway itself often hidden by natural grasses in the canyon floor. Pilots should expect tailwinds and navigate a "tight valley approach".
• Lack of Facilities and Markings: Amenities are extremely basic, limited to just an outhouse and some maintenance equipment. There are no runway boundary markers or a segmented circle around the windsock, making identification difficult, especially for unfamiliar pilots.
• Wildlife and Livestock Hazards: Pilots must be vigilant for wildlife and livestock on and in the vicinity of the runway.
• Short Runway and Density Altitude: At only 1160 feet long and an elevation of 4662 feet, the airstrip is considered short and demanding. High density altitude during summer months necessitates early morning and late evening operations.
