Approximately 1989-1990. The heliport was still visible in 1988 aerial photographs, but the site was cleared for the construction of the Gurnee Mills mall, which opened in August 1991. The closure would have occurred in the period leading up to the mall's construction.
Economic reasons and urban redevelopment. The land on which the heliport and the adjacent Nordic Lodge motel were located was acquired for the development of the Gurnee Mills regional shopping mall. The value of the property for a large-scale commercial project far outweighed its use as a small, private heliport.
The site has been completely redeveloped. The exact location of the former heliport is now part of the extensive parking lot for the Gurnee Mills shopping mall. The coordinates point specifically to the parking area near the mall entrance between the Burlington and Floor & Decor anchor stores. The original Nordic Lodge motel has also been demolished.
Nordic Heliport was a private aviation facility associated with the Nordic Lodge motel, located at the intersection of I-94 and Grand Avenue (IL-132). It was first depicted on the 1972 Chicago Sectional Chart as a private heliport with a 100-foot turf pad. Its primary function was likely to serve business executives, VIPs, and other guests of the motel, offering a quick and direct travel option to and from Chicago's primary airports (O'Hare, Midway) or downtown heliports. It is an example of the many small, private airfields and helipads that once served suburban businesses and hotels before land values led to their redevelopment.
None. The site is now a major, high-traffic commercial and retail center. There are no plans, prospects, or practical possibilities for reopening a heliport at this location due to the permanent nature of the Gurnee Mills development.
