Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

Early 2000s (approximately 2001-2002)

Reason for Closure

The heliport was closed following the bankruptcy of its operator, Montgomery Ward, in 2001. The building on which it was located, the Montgomery Ward & Co. Catalog House, was subsequently sold and redeveloped into luxury residential condominiums, a use incompatible with an active heliport.

Current Status

The site of the former heliport is now the rooftop of 'The Montgomery', a luxury residential condominium building. The roof has been completely redeveloped and now features residential amenities, including a landscaped sundeck, an observation deck, a green roof, and a dog run. No physical trace of the heliport remains.

Historical Significance

Marcor Heliport was a private rooftop heliport located atop the historic Montgomery Ward & Co. Catalog House at 600 W. Chicago Avenue. It was named for Marcor Inc., the parent company formed by the 1968 merger of Montgomery Ward and Container Corporation of America. Established in the 1970s, the heliport served as a key transportation asset for corporate executives, facilitating rapid travel to and from the company's massive headquarters and distribution center. Its existence was a symbol of corporate prestige and the convenience of executive helicopter travel during that era. The heliport consisted of a 60x60 foot concrete pad on the roof of the nationally recognized landmark building.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The site's current function as the roof of a high-end residential building makes the re-establishment of a heliport infeasible due to prohibitive safety regulations, noise abatement issues, zoning restrictions, and the incompatibility with the building's residential use.
