The airport was closed sometime between 2009 and 2016. It was still depicted on the 2009 Atlanta Sectional Chart but was no longer listed on the 2016 edition.
The specific reason for closure is not officially documented. However, as a small airfield owned by a private individual (James Howard), the closure was almost certainly due to personal reasons. This could include the owner's decision to no longer fly, the sale of the property, or an inability to continue maintaining the strip. There is no evidence it was closed due to an accident, economic issues of a larger business, or military conversion.
The site remains a private residential property. Satellite imagery shows that the former turf runway is still clearly visible as a well-maintained, mowed grass field. A building that appears to be the original hangar or a large workshop still stands at the north end of the former runway, adjacent to a private home. The land has not been redeveloped for commercial or residential purposes and retains its rural character.
Howard Private Airport was a small, private-use airfield with minimal historical significance beyond its local use. It was first depicted on aeronautical charts in 1994. The facility consisted of a single 2,200-foot north-south turf runway. According to FAA records from when it was active, it was home to one based single-engine aircraft. Its operations were exclusively for personal, general aviation use by its owner and likely invited guests.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Since the land is privately owned, any reactivation would be solely at the discretion of the current landowner and would require recertification with the FAA. Given that it has been closed for several years, reopening is considered highly unlikely.
