Approximately late 2018 to early 2019.
The heliport was closed as a direct result of the permanent closure of the Walker Memorial Medical Center campus (by then known as AdventHealth Avon Park), which it served. The parent company, AdventHealth, shut down the Avon Park hospital in late 2018 to consolidate services and resources into its other nearby facilities in Sebring and Lake Placid for operational and economic reasons.
The heliport is defunct and permanently closed. The entire former hospital site, including the location of the helipad, was purchased by Highlands County in 2021. The property has been undergoing redevelopment to be repurposed as the 'Highlands County Government Center,' which will house various county administrative offices and public services. The helipad itself is no longer in use and may have been removed or paved over during the site's conversion.
The Walker Memorial Medical Center Heliport was a private-use facility dedicated to supporting the hospital's emergency and critical care services. Its sole and vital operation was for Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS), commonly known as medevac flights. The heliport was crucial for rapidly transporting critically injured or ill patients from accident scenes to the hospital's emergency room. It also facilitated the time-sensitive transfer of patients requiring a higher level of specialized care to larger, regional trauma centers. Its significance was entirely linked to the hospital's role as a key healthcare provider for the Avon Park community and surrounding Highlands County.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The medical facility it was built to serve no longer exists, and the site's new purpose as a government administrative center does not require an aviation facility. The heliport is considered permanently closed and its identifier (US-11245) is purely for historical record.
