Approximately 2011
The heliport was closed and decommissioned as a direct result of the KPNX-TV station relocating its entire operations. In 2011, the station moved from its long-time home at 1101 N. Central Avenue (where the heliport was located) to a new, modern facility in the Arizona Republic building at 200 E. Van Buren Street. The new downtown high-rise location did not include a dedicated heliport, and the old property was subsequently sold for redevelopment, making the heliport obsolete.
The site of the former KPNX-TV studio and its heliport no longer exists. After the station's move, the entire property at 1101 N. Central Avenue was sold, and the old studio buildings were demolished. The land has been completely redeveloped and is now the location of the 'Willo North' luxury apartment complex. There is no trace of the former heliport or any aviation infrastructure.
The KPNX-TV Studios Heliport was a vital asset for the station's Electronic News Gathering (ENG) operations for many years. It was the operational base for the station's news helicopter, widely known to viewers as 'Sky 12'. From this heliport, the helicopter would launch to provide live aerial footage of major breaking news stories, traffic congestion, police pursuits, weather events, and significant public gatherings throughout the Phoenix area. This capability was crucial for competitive news coverage in a major media market, making the heliport an important logistical hub for the station's daily news production.
None. The prospect of reopening the heliport is zero. The original site has been permanently repurposed for high-density residential use with the construction of a multi-story apartment building. The original infrastructure is gone, and the current land use is incompatible with aviation operations.
