Circa 2011-2012. The airport was still listed in the FAA Airport/Facility Directory as operational in 2010 but was marked as closed and no longer appeared on aeronautical charts by 2013.
Economic reasons and change in owner's needs. Rachal Airport was a private airfield. Such airfields are often closed when they are no longer needed by their owners, or when the cost of maintenance and liability is no longer justified. There is no evidence of closure due to a specific accident, military conversion, or urban development, making disuse the most probable cause.
The airport is permanently closed and abandoned. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms the site is part of a private ranch. The faint but clear outline of the north-south runway is still visible, but it is unmaintained, overgrown with scrub brush, and clearly unusable for aircraft. The land has reverted to its use as part of the surrounding ranchland.
Rachal Airport (formerly assigned the FAA identifier T80) was a significant private airfield that served the large Rachal Ranch in rural Webb County. Its primary function was to support the ranch's operations. It featured a single, well-defined 4,100-foot by 100-foot turf runway (Runway 17/35). The airport handled private general aviation aircraft, including single and multi-engine planes, which were used to transport the ranch owners, guests, and supplies to the remote location, as well as for aerial surveys and other ranch-related activities. Its significance was entirely private, with no history of public use or commercial service.
None. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Rachal Airport. Given its remote location on private property and its closure due to lack of use, it is exceptionally unlikely that it will ever be reactivated as an airfield.
