Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 1993 and 1995. The airstrip was last depicted as active on the 1993 Brownsville Sectional Chart. A 1995 USGS aerial photograph clearly shows the runway marked with large, white closed-runway 'X' symbols, and it was no longer depicted on the 1998 World Aeronautical Chart.

Reason for Closure

The exact reason is not officially documented as it was a private facility. However, the closure is consistent with common reasons for small private airfields ceasing operations: a change in land ownership, the owner no longer having a need for the strip, increasing land value for real estate development, or the high cost of maintenance and liability. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a major accident or for military conversion.

Current Status

The airport is abandoned and the site is unused for any formal purpose. As of the early 2020s, the asphalt runway is still clearly visible on satellite imagery but is in a state of extreme disrepair, with extensive cracking, weathering, and vegetation growing through the surface. The surrounding land is undeveloped scrubland. The abandoned runway shows evidence of informal use, such as tire tracks from off-road vehicles or potential unauthorized drag racing.

Historical Significance

Resaca Airstrip was a small, privately owned general aviation airfield. Its name is derived from its location near the natural 'resacas' (oxbow lakes) of the Rio Grande. First appearing on maps in the late 1970s, it featured a single paved runway, approximately 3,000 feet long and 40 feet wide, oriented roughly north-south (17/35). It served local private pilots for recreational and personal business travel. Given its location in the Rio Grande Valley, it may have also supported agricultural aviation operations such as crop dusting. It was never a public-use or commercial airport and held no major strategic or military importance.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Resaca Airstrip. The significant cost required to resurface the runway and bring the facility up to modern standards makes it economically unfeasible. Furthermore, its close proximity to the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (KBRO) and its associated airspace would complicate its reactivation. The land is more likely to be slated for future agricultural use or real estate development than to be revived as an airfield.
