The Montrose BLM Heliport, more commonly known as the Montrose Helitack Base, is a key component of the Montrose Interagency Fire Management Unit (MIFMU). Its primary historical and ongoing role is to support wildland firefighting operations for the Bureau of Land Management and its partner agencies across Southwest Colorado. For many years, it has served as the base for a 'Helitack' crew—a team of specialized firefighters transported by helicopter for rapid initial attack on wildfires. The helicopter is also used for water drops, aerial reconnaissance, and logistical support in remote and rugged terrain.
