Approximately 1971-1972. The airport was depicted as active in a 1971 flight guide but was officially marked as 'Closed' on the 1972 Winston-Salem Sectional Chart.
The closure was primarily due to its replacement by a larger, more modern facility. The nearby Wilson Industrial Air Center (now the Rocky Mount-Wilson Regional Airport, KRWI) opened, making the smaller, privately-owned Wood Airport obsolete. This is a common economic and infrastructural reason for the closure of older general aviation airports.
The site is no longer an airport and has been significantly redeveloped. The former runway is now completely overgrown with trees and fields, though its faint outline is still visible in historical and current satellite imagery. The property along the access road, 'Wood Airport Rd', has been developed for commercial and light industrial purposes, with several modern buildings now occupying the land where the airport once stood.
Wood Airport was the main airport for Wilson, NC, from at least the mid-1940s until its closure. It served as a vital hub for the local general aviation community. Initially featuring an unpaved turf runway, it was later upgraded to a 3,000-foot paved runway. Operations included flight training, private aircraft storage (hangars and tiedowns), aircraft maintenance, and fuel services, primarily managed by Wilson Air Service Inc. It supported the region's private and business flying needs for several decades.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Wood Airport. The land has been repurposed and partially built upon, and the aviation needs of Wilson and the surrounding area are fully served by the much larger and better-equipped Rocky Mount-Wilson Regional Airport (KRWI).
