Approximately 2003-2004. The airport was depicted on the 2003 Brownsville Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 2004 edition. Aerial imagery from 2006 confirms the site was being prepared for new construction.
Economic reasons, specifically urban development. The airport was located in a rapidly growing suburban area of the Rio Grande Valley. The valuable land was sold and redeveloped for commercial use, a common fate for privately-owned airfields near expanding cities.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as a former airport. It is now occupied by the Mission Palms Crossing shopping center, with a Walmart Supercenter and its associated parking lot situated directly over the former runway's location. The surrounding area is a dense commercial zone with various retail stores and restaurants.
Putz Airport was a privately-owned, private-use general aviation airfield. It was not a major commercial or military facility. First appearing on aeronautical charts around 1970, it was owned by Robert Putz and featured a single unpaved turf runway (17/35) approximately 2,600 feet long. The airport operated under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and served local private pilots. Its history is representative of the many small, family-owned airfields that have disappeared across the United States due to economic pressures and urban sprawl.
None. The land has been permanently and irrevocably converted to high-density commercial use. There are no plans or possibilities for the site to ever be used as an airport again.
As I know they are no longer in service the green colored that is on east side of Abram Rd was a pesticide type airport for small yellow aircrafts. The magenta colored on west side was a private landing stretch and the guy used that for his go kart type airplane those small ones that has a go kart engine type, and also I think he no longer use that stretch, that's his house property. It was nice to hear those planes on the area. I wish to see them again.
