Approximately 2011. The airport's closure is directly linked to the closure of the adjacent Northrop Grumman facility it served.
Economic and corporate restructuring. The airfield was a private facility owned and operated by the defense contractor Northrop Grumman to support its electronics and systems manufacturing plant. When Northrop Grumman ceased operations at the Perry plant and closed it, the associated airfield was no longer needed and was decommissioned as part of the site's transition.
The site has been completely redeveloped. In 2012, the former Northrop Grumman plant and its associated airfield were transformed into the 'Guardian Centers of Georgia.' This is a massive, 830-acre, privately owned disaster preparedness and validation training center. It provides realistic, large-scale training scenarios for first responders, military units, and federal agencies, featuring simulated collapsed cities, flooded neighborhoods, and a multi-lane highway for complex drills. The former runway area has been fully integrated into this secure training complex and is no longer used for manned aircraft operations.
The airport, known as Middle Georgia Airport, was not a public-use or general aviation facility. It was a private, unpaved/turf airstrip established by Northrop Grumman likely in the 1980s. Its sole purpose was to support the operations of the adjacent manufacturing plant. This plant was a significant local employer and was involved in major U.S. defense contracts, including key work on the E-8 Joint STARS (JSTARS) aircraft surveillance program, which is based at the nearby Robins Air Force Base. The airfield would have handled corporate and operational flights related to the company's defense activities.
None. The site has been fully and permanently repurposed into the Guardian Centers training facility. The infrastructure for a functioning airport no longer exists on the property, and the land is dedicated to its current role as a secure training center. The region's aviation needs are served by the nearby Perry-Houston County Airport (KPXE).
