Wind Rock Ranch Airport

The airport was a private-use facility exclusively serving the Wind Rock Ranch. The closure was a result of abandonment, which is common for private airstrips. This typically happens when the ranch owner sells the property, no longer owns an aircraft, or otherwise ceases aviation operations. The gradual deterioration of the runway, as seen in satellite photos, points to a simple lack of need and subsequent cessation of maintenance, rather than a closure forced by an accident, economic pressure, or regulatory action.

The airport site is completely defunct and has been reclaimed by the natural environment. The physical location of the former runway is still visible in satellite imagery as a faint linear scar on the landscape. However, it is heavily overgrown with native sagebrush and grasses, rendering it unusable for any type of aircraft. The land remains part of the private Wind Rock Ranch and is not publicly accessible. There are no remaining airport facilities or markings.

Wind Rock Ranch Airport's significance was purely private and logistical. It provided direct air access to a large, remote ranch in the rugged terrain of Fremont County, Wyoming. When active, it handled private general aviation traffic, likely single-engine aircraft such as Cessnas, Pipers, or Maules, which are capable of operating from short, unpaved fields. The airport featured a single dirt/gravel runway, designated 10/28, with a length of approximately 4,500 feet and a width of 50 feet. At an elevation of roughly 7,500 feet, this runway length was necessary to accommodate safe takeoffs and landings for light aircraft in the high-density altitude environment.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Wind Rock Ranch Airport. As a private facility that has been abandoned for over a decade, its restoration would require a substantial private investment from the landowner to clear, grade, and potentially re-certify the airstrip. Without a specific need from a new owner who is also an aviator, it is highly improbable that the airport will be brought back into service.
