Khuzhir Airport (UIKH) is a small, non-operational airstrip that does not receive commercial flights. Transportation must be arranged from the nearest major airport, Irkutsk International Airport (IKT). From Irkutsk, you can hire a private taxi or pre-book a transfer to Khuzhir. The journey takes 4-5 hours and is often done in rugged minivans (like the UAZ Bukhanka) that can handle the island's roads.
Car rental is not available at the non-operational Khuzhir airstrip. You can rent a car at Irkutsk International Airport (IKT) from various agencies. A 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended as all roads on Olkhon Island are unpaved. Be prepared for a long drive (approx. 300 km) and potentially long queues for the car ferry to the island.
There is no public transit at the closed Khuzhir airstrip. The most common way to get to Khuzhir from Irkutsk is by marshrutka (shared minibus). These buses depart daily from the central bus station or market area in Irkutsk (a short taxi ride from the airport) and travel all the way to Khuzhir, including the ferry crossing. The trip takes approximately 5-6 hours.
