Taxis are the most common way to get from the airport. You can find official and private taxis waiting outside the terminal. Ride-hailing apps like Yandex.Go also operate in the region. It is highly recommended to negotiate and agree on the fare before the trip begins, as meters are not consistently used. Taxis can take you directly to nearby towns like Cholpon-Ata, Karakol, and other resorts around the lake.
Car rental services are available, but it is essential to book in advance. There are no major international rental company desks inside the airport terminal. Typically, local rental agencies will arrange to meet you at the airport with your pre-booked vehicle. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended along with your national license. Renting a car provides the most flexibility for exploring the Issyk-Kul region.
There is no direct public bus or 'marshrutka' (shared minibus) service from the airport terminal. To access public transport, you must first take a short taxi ride to the main road (A363) or the nearby village of Tamchy. From there, you can catch a passing marshrutka that travels along the lake's northern shore towards major destinations like Cholpon-Ata and Karakol. This is the most economical but least convenient option.
