The airfield ceased regular aviation operations in the early 1990s. It became completely defunct and inaccessible with the start of the war in Donbas in 2014.
The initial closure was due to economic reasons following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, which led to the collapse of the DOSAAF system that funded and operated such airfields. Its permanent closure and subsequent decay are a direct result of the military conflict that began in 2014, as Holubivka (formerly Kirovsk) was occupied by Russian-led forces and became part of an active front line.
The airfield is completely abandoned and in a state of ruin. Satellite imagery shows the faint outline of a single, unpaved (grass/dirt) runway which is heavily overgrown. There are no visible aircraft or functional buildings. The site is located in a territory of Ukraine currently under Russian military occupation and is situated within or very near an active, high-intensity conflict zone. The area is likely contaminated with unexploded ordnance and may have been used for military staging by occupying forces.
During the Soviet era, this was a small, local airfield operated by DOSAAF (The Voluntary Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Navy). Its primary purpose was for civilian sport aviation, including basic flight training on light aircraft (like the Yak-52), glider towing, and parachuting. It served as a training ground for aspiring pilots and sports parachutists but held no significant strategic military or commercial passenger/cargo role. Operations were limited to small, light propeller aircraft.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airfield in the foreseeable future. Its location within an active warzone and on occupied territory makes any civilian project impossible. Even in a hypothetical post-conflict scenario, the airfield's lack of strategic importance and the immense scale of reconstruction required in the region would place its restoration at an extremely low priority.
