Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Circa early 1990s

Reason for Closure

The airport's closure is attributed to the widespread economic collapse that followed the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Like hundreds of other small, local airfields across the former USSR, Prymors'k Airport was financially dependent on the centralized Soviet state and the state-run airline, Aeroflot. With the end of state subsidies and the fragmentation of the Aeroflot network, local air services became economically unviable. The sharp decline in demand for regional passenger and agricultural flights rendered the airport obsolete.

Current Status

The airport is completely abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (46.7441, 36.32766) shows a faint outline of a single, unpaved runway that is now entirely overgrown with grass and shrubs. Several dirt tracks cross the former airfield. The few small buildings on the site, likely a former terminal and support structures, appear to be in a state of severe disrepair or have been dismantled. There is no infrastructure to support any aviation activity.

Crucially, since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the city of Prymors'k and the surrounding Zaporizhzhia Oblast have been under Russian military occupation. The site is located within a conflict zone, and its status is subject to the ongoing military situation.

Historical Significance

During the Soviet era, Prymors'k Airport was a vital component of the local infrastructure, connecting the town and surrounding rural areas. Its operations were typical for a small regional airfield of its time:
- **Local Passenger Services:** It handled short-haul passenger flights, likely operated by small aircraft such as the Antonov An-2, connecting Prymors'k to larger regional hubs like Berdiansk, Melitopol, and the oblast capital, Zaporizhzhia.
- **Agricultural Aviation:** The airport was a base for agricultural aircraft (primarily the An-2) used for crop dusting, seeding, and fertilization of the vast farmlands in the region. This was a critical function for Soviet collective farms.
- **Utility and Medical Flights:** It likely supported air ambulance (sanitary aviation) services and other utility flights for government and industrial needs.
Overall, it served as a key link for transportation, agriculture, and emergency services in the Prymors'k Raion before the decline of local aviation.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Prymors'k Airport. Even before the 2022 invasion, its state of complete disrepair and the lack of economic justification made any revival highly improbable. Given the current military occupation and the active conflict in the region, any discussion of reopening the airfield for civilian use is nonexistent. The future of the site is entirely dependent on the outcome of the war and subsequent reconstruction priorities, which are unlikely to include the restoration of a small, long-defunct airfield.
