Approximately early to mid-1990s. A precise date is not documented, but its closure coincides with the period following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Economic reasons and systemic change. The airfield was operated by the local chapter of DOSAAF (Voluntary Society for Assistance to the Army, Air Force and Navy), a Soviet-era paramilitary sports organization. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, state funding for such organizations and their extensive infrastructure was cut. The newly independent Ukraine could not afford to maintain the vast network of small training airfields, leading to the abandonment and eventual closure of facilities like Chernihiv West.
The airfield is completely abandoned and defunct. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a clearly defined but derelict grass/dirt runway that is heavily overgrown with vegetation and unusable for any aviation activity. The surrounding land appears to be used for agriculture. Any buildings or infrastructure that once supported the airfield are either in ruins or have been completely removed. The site has no current aviation function.
The airfield was a local center for general aviation and paramilitary training. Its primary function was to serve the Chernihiv Aviation Sports Club (Авіаційно-спортивний клуб). Operations included:
- **Primary Flight Training:** Training civilian and youth pilots on light propeller aircraft, such as the Yakovlev Yak-52.
- **Glider Operations:** Launching and training on gliders.
- **Parachute Training:** Serving as a base for sports parachuting and pre-conscription training.
It was a grassroots facility that introduced many young people to aviation but was not a major military installation or a commercial passenger airport.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Chernihiv West Airfield. The infrastructure is non-existent, and the land is more valuable for agriculture or other development. Any regional aviation development efforts would be focused on the larger, more strategically important airports in the area, such as the Chernihiv Shestovitsa Airport (UKKL) or the Chernihiv Pivtsi Air Base.
