The airstrip ceased operations in the early to mid-1990s. An exact date is not documented, but its closure coincides with the period following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The closure was due to economic reasons. The airstrip was an agricultural aviation base serving the local collective farm system (kolkhoz). With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the state-funded agricultural model was dismantled, eliminating the economic basis and operational need for such airfields. The equipment, funding, and centralized demand for its services disappeared, leading to its abandonment.
The site is completely abandoned and in a state of advanced decay. Satellite imagery shows a single, paved runway approximately 450 meters long that is severely cracked, weathered, and being overgrown by grass and weeds. The former apron and taxiway areas are almost entirely reclaimed by vegetation. The few small support buildings on the site are derelict and in ruins. The land is not actively used for any other purpose and is slowly being reclaimed by nature.
Pogorelovka Airstrip, also known locally as Zastavna Airfield, was a typical Soviet-era agricultural airfield ('khim-ploshchadka'). Its primary function was to support large-scale farming operations in the Chernivtsi Oblast. It served as a base for utility aircraft, almost certainly the Antonov An-2, which were used for aerial application of fertilizers and pesticides (crop dusting). These small airfields were a vital component of the Soviet agricultural infrastructure, enabling the intensive farming practices of the time. Its significance is not in major military or civil passenger transport, but as a representative example of a widespread, now-defunct, economic and logistical system.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Pogorelovka Airstrip. The infrastructure is beyond economical repair, and the original purpose for its existence is obsolete due to modern agricultural methods (e.g., GPS-guided ground sprayers and agricultural drones). Given its remote rural location and the current geopolitical situation in Ukraine, any investment in reviving the airstrip is highly improbable. The prospects for reopening are considered to be zero.
