Approximately in the early to mid-1990s. A specific date is not documented, but its closure coincides with the widespread collapse of the local Soviet aviation network following the dissolution of the USSR in 1991.
Primarily economic reasons. The airstrip was part of the state-subsidized Aeroflot system. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the new economic reality of independent Ukraine could not support the vast network of small, local airfields. The decline of the collective farm system, which was the primary client for agricultural aviation, and the loss of state funding for local passenger routes made operations from Pishchanka financially unviable.
The site is completely abandoned and no longer functions as an airport. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a clearly visible but derelict grass/dirt runway. The land is overgrown, and parts of the former airstrip appear to be used as farmland or for farm access tracks. There is no remaining aviation infrastructure, such as buildings or navigation equipment, on the site.
Pishchanka Airstrip was a typical local airfield of the Soviet era, integral to the regional infrastructure. Its main purpose was to serve as a base for agricultural aviation (known as 'сельхозавиация' or 'сільгоспавіація'). Aircraft, most commonly the Antonov An-2, would operate from the strip for crop dusting, fertilization, and pest control on the large collective farms (kolkhozes) in the area. It may have also supported limited local passenger and mail services, connecting the town to the regional capital, Vinnytsia, as part of Aeroflot's local air services network ('Местные воздушные линии' - MVL).
There are no known plans or realistic prospects for reopening the Pishchanka Airstrip. The economic model that supported such small airfields no longer exists. The demand for local air travel is met by ground transportation, and modern agricultural aviation, where used, is typically handled by private operators with more flexible basing needs. Given the current geopolitical situation and the war in Ukraine, national resources are focused on defense and the reconstruction of critical infrastructure, not the revival of defunct Soviet-era local airstrips.
