Approximately 1993-1994
Military downsizing and strategic reorganization following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The air regiment based at Turynka was disbanded as part of the reduction of armed forces in the newly independent Ukraine. The airfield was deemed surplus to the requirements of the Ukrainian Air Force and was subsequently abandoned.
The airfield is completely abandoned and in a state of severe disrepair. The runway, taxiways, and numerous hardened aircraft shelters (HAS) are still visible on satellite imagery but are heavily deteriorated and overgrown with vegetation. Over the past decades, much of the infrastructure, particularly the concrete slabs from the runway and aprons, has been systematically dismantled and scavenged for use as local building materials. The site is not used for any aviation activities and is effectively a ruin.
During the Cold War, Turynka was a significant forward operating base for the Soviet Air Force (VVS). It was home to the 92nd Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment (92-й АПИБ), which was part of the 289th Fighter-Bomber Aviation Division, under the command of the 14th Air Army of the Carpathian Military District. The regiment was equipped with MiG-27K and MiG-27D fighter-bombers, having previously operated MiG-21 aircraft. Its strategic location, approximately 60 km from the Polish border, made it a key asset for projecting air power and conducting potential strike missions against NATO targets in Central Europe.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening the Turynka airfield. The cost of rebuilding the entire infrastructure (runway, taxiways, facilities) would be prohibitive. The site is strategically obsolete, and Ukraine has other operational military and civilian airfields that serve the region's needs. Its reopening is considered highly unlikely.
